2 US soldiers probed for Afghan prisoner abuse
The U.S. military is investigating whether two of its soldiers abused a detainee in Afghanistan, a military statement said.
Capt. Roger T. Hill and 1st Sgt. Tommy L. Scott, both of 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, are facing an article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian grand jury investigation, to determine whether they should be brought to trial, the statement said.
The initial hearing was held Monday at the U.S. Camp Salerno, in Afghanistan's eastern Khost province. It follows a report from within the unit about potential detainee abuse, the statement said.

Gunmen on motorbike shoot dead Afghan official
Gunmen on a motorbike killed a district chief in central Afghanistan on Monday, a provincial spokesman said.
Abdul Rahim Desewal was shot dead as he left his house in Ghazni city, capital of central Ghazni province, said Sayed Ismail Jahangir, spokesman for the provincial governor. Desewal's bodyguard was wounded in the attack.
The gunmen fled the scene after the shooting, Jahangir said.
Desewal was the chief of Andar district in Ghazni province, an area of intense militant activity.

Police: 8 killed in clashes in northwest Pakistan
Six Pakistani security officers and two suspected militants were killed Sunday in new violence close to the Afghan border, police said.
Also Sunday, paramilitary troops patrolled the streets of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, following fighting between ethnic and political gangs that left 16 people dead in the past two days, said Waseem Ahmed, the city police chief.
Pakistan is undergoing a surge in attacks by Islamist militants based in the wild, tribal regions in the northwest, from where they also stage attacks on Western troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

UN: Taliban could clear $500M from 2008 drug trade
The Taliban and other warlords could clear almost half a billion dollars from Afghanistan's opium trade this year _ money that will help finance insurgent attacks, the U.N.'s drug czar said.
Antonio Maria Costa, head of the U.N.'s Office on Drugs and Crime, said the Taliban also appears to be stockpiling the drug to manipulate its price, after several years in which production surpassed world demand.
Afghanistan produces over 90 percent of the world's opium, the raw ingredient for making heroin.

Terror leader slams US, Afghanistan gov'ts
Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader has lashed out at Afghanistan's government and claimed that any U.S. gains in Iraq will be temporary, a terror monitoring group said Thursday.
In a new video, Ayman Al-Zawahri also lauded his group's fight in several countries and criticized leaders of those nations for their fight to counter the terrorists, according to SITE Intelligence group.
Zawahri's comments, carried on a militant Web site Thursday, came about a week after his last message in which he accused President-elect Barack Obama of turning his back on his black heritage to gain power.
