TiGO Rocks Accra With Republic Day Jam

It�s rather strange that Republic Day often goes uncelebrated in this country. One would have thought that this being a jubilee year, there would have been a lot of events to commemorate the day Ghana decided not to recognise the Queen as head of state.

But apart from African leaders zooming around in plush, brand new salon cars, talking shop and simply having a good time, there was nothing to celebrate the day. Errr� that�s not exactly true.

As the heads of state was speaking about continental unity at the Accra International Conference Centre, thousands of revellers were having a good time united by one brand: TiGO. And that was the event this year�s Republic Day will be most remembered for (after the AU summit, of course).

TiGO put together a good show for its loyal subscribers and they enjoyed themselves to the max -- enjoying good sounds from some of the nation�s best acts and playing fun games to win assorted TiGO souvenirs. And there were also some good sights to behold as the ladies turned up at their seductive best, wearing attractive bikinis with lycra and handkerchief-sized tops as well as TiGO branded t-shirts.

Ghanaian music lovers and entertainment enthusiasts have for years yearned and prayed for a local artiste who can raise high the flag of Ghana, as well as rub shoulders with the best on the world stage.

As part of Ghana�s 50th Anniversary and the contribution of our quota to the development of Ghana, Empire Entertainment in collaboration with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and Zoom Lion Waste Management took it upon themselves to clean up the whole of Accra on Saturday June 30.

Starting from the 37 vicinity at 7:00am, some musicians, loyal citizens, actors and actresses and music producers came in their numbers to help keep Ghana clean.

Gyedu Blay Ambolley To Be Crowned Today

Gyedu Blay Ambolley, the King of Simingwa, will today be honoured at a ceremony at the residence of Mr Mats Karlsson, the Resident Representative of the World Bank.

The ceremony dubbed �The crowning of Ambolley,� will be attended by a cross-section of Ghanaian artistes and ministers of state.

An elaborate programme drawn up for the ceremony will include an Art exhibition by artists from Accra, Kumasi, Ougadougou and Lome.

Pa John Bentsifi Dadson will introduce Ambolley, with Amanzeba Nat Brew and the Native Orchestra ushering in the King of Singwa.

50 Arrested For Piracy

A combined team of Police personnel and members of the anti-piracy task force of the Ghana Association of Phonographic Industries (GAPI) and Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGA) has arrested 50 people suspected to be behind pirated musical works in the country.

The suspects were arrested from their hideouts at Bantama, Asafo, Koofrom and Atonsu, all in Kumasi.

The team seized empty and pirated audio compact discs, video compact discs (VCDs), CD bags, flat screen computers and accessories, television sets, equalizers and amplifiers and recording systems. The seized items were valued at over �800 million.

Seized pirated works from music shops and drinking spots included the compilations of Ofori Amponsah, Esther Smith, Diana Asamoah, Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong, Tic Tac, Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, among others.

Fisk Jubilee Singers Perform In Ghana

Ace U.S. choir, Fisk University Jubilee Singers would in July treat Ghanaians to a fantastic three-day choral concert.

The choir would be staging free performances in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast.

However, the Accra show is strictly by invitation and would as well open the jamboree on Thursday July 5 at the National Theater in Accra. It would be followed by colorful renditions at the St. Cyprian�s Cathedral in Kumasi on Saturday July 7 and climaxed at the Cape Coast castle on July 9.

Organized in collaboration with the US Embassy in Ghana, the concert is part of the numerous programmes the embassy had been organising throughout the year under the theme: �Ghana-US @ 50: Looking Back, Moving Forward�. It also forms part of events for Ghana�s Golden Jubilee celebration.

If the authenticity and coronation of a prophet is always in another town, then Ghana Music Award superstar, Ofori Amponsah has undoubtedly proved that he is a music legend worthy of all honor and adoration, be it in Ghana or another, like he recently did in Liberia.

From day one, 24 year old, Benjamin Akill, established himself as a very confident guy who knew exactly what he was about on Stars of the Future 2006.

Each week, he earned more fans who were predominantly young ladies. And again each week it became quite obvious that he was the one Jessica referred to when she goes "&..ladies and gentlemen our next performer is a ladies man, quite often he is been described as a sexy looking guy with a smooth voice that probably charms the ladies&."

But as the nature of the game had it, Akill's stay in the competition was short lived when last Wednesday, in a rather touching competition, he was ushered out of the competition with as little as 5.93% of public votes.

MUSIGA Hunts For New Officers

The term of the incumbent governing body of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) would soon come to an end as new officers are being hunted for to steer the affairs of the organization.

On November 14, the union would be holding its quadrennial delegates� congress at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The congress, among other things is expected to be used to elect competent and committed officials to hold office for the next four years.

Among the positions they would vie for is the MUSIGA president, currently held by Alhaji Sidiku Buari, first and second vice presidents, held by Diana Akiwumi and Edinam Ansah respectively.

Republic Day Bash At Tesano Sports Club

Rockstone�s Off The Hook

Close to one year Reggie Rockstone was charged with car theft, the self-acclaimed �Godfather of hiplife�, has been acquitted and all the charges dropped. Funny enough, the lady who brought the charges against Reggie, hardly turned up in court.

After a while the judge got tired of her no-show and declared that if she didn�t turn up for the next court arraignment, the case would be thrown out of court. �I was praying for her not to show up,� Reggie told JIVE.

So when it happened exactly as he hoped, he was more than elated. On Wednesday June 20th, Reggie�s accuser failed to make an appearance in court and the judge did as he has threatened.

�Initially, I was expected to crumble because of my so-called star status in my country, but there�s no bad publicity in showbiz,� he says. �I missed shows, was rejected by certain corporate bodies, and now I�m suing her for defamation of character.�

Stars of the Future: Down To 9

When Ernest was given the boot on the �Stars of the Future� reality show, it left most of the contestants wondering when they will be axed. You see, Ernest was one of those highly tipped to win the contest so his eviction came as a surprise to many.

All the same, just as anything in entertainment, the show must go on. It was Specialist Night last Friday; contestants, down to 9, chose their own songs, with the backing of Johnny Fingers, music director, and the Shabbo Crew Band.

Bibie enjoyed the night�s first performance � Sandra�s rendition of Beyonce�s �Listen� on the �Dream Girls� movie. Zapp felt inspired by the performance. Next came Clare who did �You raised me up�. She further deepened the mellow mood for the night.

But when she finished Zapp felt there was more she could have done with her voice. Bibie�s ears were slightly irritated by the �sharpness� of her voice but was nonetheless impressed with the way she communicated with the audience.

From The Grave, Mufty Wins �Presenter�s Guide�

Fans of �Presenters Guide� on TV3 were left in utter awe over the weekend when the five finalists (Turbo B, Andy Dusty, Delay, Black Rasta and Wofa K) decided to share the prize money and declare the late Mufty Dabre winner of the show.

Showing solidarity by sharing in the pain of a friend may be commendable, but many were left wondering whether declaring Mufty winner was the right thing to do.

�It doesn�t make sense,� an avid fan of the show said, wondering why the producers refused to give any consideration to the numerous public votes by text messaging.

The audience was filled with visible disgust by that decision.

Tom Bright Davies To Release �Love, Love, Love�

The Rev. Tom Bright Davies is no stranger to the Ghanaian gospel music scene. For over two decades, he�s been playing at live concerts across the country and in other parts of the world.

He�s also a well-known vocal trainer and he�s been a mentor for many musicians.
After several years in the studio, Rev. Davies is set to release his fifth album � �Love, love, love� � this weekend.

�This album is coming in the 25th year of my live concerts career and so for me it�s kind of special,� he says. �In terms of style the album is very trendy and timeless.�

After the album�s release, Rev. Davies intends to embark on a nationwide tour to promote it. Erico Emerges The Favourite - As He Bounces Back To The Mentor House

After groping his way through the dark tunnel of eviction for sometime, humorous Erico has finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel�he has been voted back into the Mentor House.

This week�s eviction free edition of Mentor 3 saw Erico emerging the favorite of the fans against four other evicted contestants: KG, Peter, Gina and the ailing Nana who, as though knew what fate awaited him, did not turn up for the show.

The program started with individual performances by the four evicted contestants except Nana. Many tipped KG as the one to return to the Mentor House as his own version of Akon�s �Don�t Matter� got the whole house on their feet, jumping and waving to the smooth rhythm this young chap was dishing out.

After the four had had their turn, Lisa showed up with the song �Walatu Walasa�, an old tune from the group known as Wulomei. She was cladded in a traditional piece of cloth with beads to match, and her voice did match her outfit. But for Mark, the �judge of doom� who called the performance a mediocre, all the other judges gave two thumbs up for her effort. The contestant who presumably carried the day was Dela with the hit song from Wulomei in the 1980�s titled �Meridian�.

Remix Help Shake Ma Silence - K. K. Fosu

The ever controversial hiplife artiste Kwame Kaakyire Fosu, who is known in showbiz as K. K. Fosu, has said all the three albums he has to his credit with two re-mix ones, came in two years interval and that has been the reason for his remix songs recently.

This he clarified would keep his fans and music lovers on the roll and feel his existence and also to break the whole 24 months of silence before each major release.

Ever since the death of the celebrated entertainer, radio DJ and a CEO, Muftawa Abubakar Dabre, many schools of thought have come out to associate his death to several meaning and interpretations.

Whiles stories about how he died and names making rounds as to who killed him, the eminent story is told of a death threat he received from a guy who claimed Mufty was following his lady. Several attempts by the said guy to ward Mufty off his lady yielded no fruits so he decided to consult a native doctor who took away Mufty�s soul.

In the light of all these rumors and speculations, Abubakar Sadiq, popular known as D� Flex, an up and coming musician and the kid brother of Mufty, has come out to plead with the public to leave the soul of his departed brother and manager alone.

Najo Begins To Climb Higher

Ever since the hiplife group FBS of Oluman Boogie fame went solo and NAJO released �Me Suro�, the song has caught much attention by fans in Africa and is now flying abroad.

Habib Abass as officially called was in Liberia for a peace concert organized by UN after the elections in the Easter season. Before then, he had performed some shows in Kumasi, Takoradi and Cape Coast.

With the album which has 12 tracks on the CD and 8 on cassettes under Nakos Production as well as Micro Bell management, the artiste describes it as excellence in promotion except for a fact that some sections of the media are not helping in this regard. Renowned engineers like Jay Q and Oteng who programmed the songs did what yeoman could do to render the piece a success.

Under the production of Nakos and other source, the artiste is set to embark on a Europe tour at the end of this month and beyond. On June 30, 2007, he would perform an HIV show in Italy and on the 7th of July next month, would represent at the Ghana Music Awards, Italy with other artistes including the MOBO award winner Samini.

Vision In Progress (VIP) as they are widely known has really made good remarks ever since they started their music carrier some ten years ago. They have really done a lot for themselves and Ghana music.

They have contributed a lot not only in the entertainment industry but also social and sporting field all in all the endeavors they are supported by their industrious producer and manager Goodies Music. Their fifth album on the market is making great impact on the market both locally and internationally.

Their music video is second on Channel O and also they have been nominated in an award called AMEN in Nigeria.

They were nominated twice for the Best Collaboration category that is their song with 2Face Indibia and another one with Tony Tetula. Reggie RockstoneClose to one year Reggie Rockstone was charged with car theft, the self-acclaimed �Godfather of hiplife�, has been acquitted and all the charges dropped. Funny enough, the lady who brought the charges against Reggie, hardly turned up in court.

After a while the judge got tired of her no-show and declared that if she didn�t turn up for the next court arraignment, the case would be thrown out of court.

�I was praying for her not to show up,� Reggie told JIVE. So when it happened exactly as he hoped, he was more than elated. On Wednesday June 20th, Reggie�s accuser failed to make an appearance in court and the judge did as he has threatened.

�Initially, I was expected to crumble because of my so-called star status in my country, but there�s no bad publicity in showbiz,� he says. �I missed shows, was rejected by certain corporate bodies, and now I�m suing her for defamation of character.�

Ghanaian DJs In USA To Be Honoured

Over the years, there have been many memorable Ghanaian events which have occurred in America, and most of the time, one person becomes the entertainer who makes the occasion a success.

The person drives guests to the dance floor with their creative skills on the "turn-table" by delivering non-stop old and new school, Ghanaian music as well as reggae, Soukous, R&B and Hip-pop. Many of these Disc Jockeys have been entertaining the community for over 20 years. There are also DJ's who have not been in the game for so long but are very creative, competitive and "dangerous". One such DJ happens to be the youngest Ghanaian DJ in America; DJ Ronnie, Bronx, NY.

Having a selection of DJs gives the community a variety to choose from. With such great talent, it is surprising that over the years, these experts have not received the recognition they deserve.

Fortunately, that era of not being recognized is a thing of the past. The 1st Annual Ghanaian Disc Jockey Recognition Night will take place on July 3rd, 2007. According to the brain behind the event, Hashim Haruna, CEO of Boogie Down Productions, "For so long we have danced to the mixes of these DJs and now we need the community's support in recognizing them."

Mentor Goes 'Oldies' .....As Erico Returns

TV3 Mentor III went for African oldies last Sunday with amazing performances from all six contestants who all proved they were in a class of their own.

It was an eviction free as well as a come back show for the four evictees. Of course the Studio B was full to the max with lovely audience who have come to witness the show.

The Judges comprising Dominic, Mama Rama, 'notorious' Mark and a guest Judge Director of Engineering, Sam Helwani, of Master Mix Band were around to do their usual thing.

The show commenced the evictees comprising Peter representing the Ashanti region, Erico from the Greater Accra, Gina representing the Eastern region and K-G from the Westside respectively.

ICBC Launches Album

Apostle Noah Badu Amoah will launch his second album "Yeni Begye" at the International Christian Bible Church, Mallam Branch, Accra, on Sunday, July 8.

The album has ten songs on CD and eight songs on cassette. The songs include the title song "Yeni Begye�, Yen Mre Ngu and �Nyame Ye�, a very touching worship song.

Asked in an interview how he came by his heart touching songs, Apostle Badu Amoah told �The Spectator� that the words or messages usually came to him during prayers, meditation and during sleep.

He said the songs are a ministration to all Christians. "The songs are also meant to assist Christians in their worship as well as enable men of God to use them as basis for teaching their members the word of God.

Biography of Mac Tontoh

Most people, who know him well, know him as the man on the trumpet. Mac Tontoh (name in showbiz) was introduced to the trumpet at a very young age by his late father Michael Tontoh, a goldsmith cum father, who played the instrument in the church.

Kweku Adabanka Tonto, as he was named at birth in the 1940s in Kumasi, grew up listening to jazz on the radio and to highlife which dominated the region at that time.

He started music during his school days at the Roma Catholic school in Kumasi. Mac Tontoh�s first professional break came when he joined The Comets, led by his brother, Teddy Osei after his elementary education.

After playing comets where he gained experience, he from time to time played with some other bands in and around Kumasi and finally moved to Accra in 1962.

For many years, the two popular Ghanaian musicians were the best of friends. They were so close that Barosky is part of Ofori�s success.

Today, things are no longer the way it used to be between the two erstwhile friends.

According to insiders, those who were jealous of their music and friendly relationship began the terrible rumours that tore them apart.

BUSAC Support For Ghana's Music Industry

The Business Sector Advocacy Challenge (BUSAC) Fund has released about 680 million cedis to the Ghana Association of Phonographic Industry (GAPI) to undertake advocacy initiatives to ensure Ghanaian Music Industry benefited from long term national, international and multi-lateral financing.

Mr Francis Mensah Twum, General Secretary of GAPI told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the support came in the nick of time, adding "the Ghanaian music industry is in its elements and there could not have been any better time to capitalize on the available prospects.

" BUSAC is a fund initially set up by Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) to assist civil society, private sector, trades unions and the media to influence national policies of developing countries through advocacy.

The fund is also supported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Department for International Development (DFID) of United Kingdom.

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), has held what it termed a "family meeting in Accra aimed at thrashing out petty differences among its members.

A meeting convened at the instance of Alhaji Sidiku Buari, President of the Union, sought to bring on board other factional musicians' groups like the Ghana Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and Song Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).

In an address Alhaji Buari stressed the need for the various musicians groups to forge a common front to pursue their interests.

He told the meeting that the divisions within their ranks was costing them a lot and added that some persons had taken advantage of their disunity to engage in piracy, which was affecting them financially.

Stars Of The Future II: Ernest Shown The Exit

At the third eviction show of stars of the future, there was a playback of the performances of all contestants at last week's show. This enabled the contestants to further access their own performance of the night.

Soon the dread moments came when Ernest's name was mentioned as the third evictee of the second edition of stars of the future.

Ernest who represented Ghana at the recently ended West African Idols but had to be evicted along the line due to the Nigerian dominance.

Queen Of Peace Choir Are Champs

The Queen of Peace Catholic Church Choir put up one of their best performances in recent years to beat stiff opposition from five other choirs to be crowned the 2007 Choral Champions in a competition held at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church at Madina near Accra.

The biennial choral competition, which was under the distinguished patronage of the Commissioner of Value Added Tax Service (VAT), Mr. Anthony Minlah, saw the Queen of Peace Choir shrugging off opposition from St. Bernadette Choir, Madina, St. Francis Assisi Choir from Ashaley Botwe, St. Mark Choir from Ashongman Estates and Holy Rosary from Adenta.

The choirs were called in order after the balloting of the singing arrangement and had to sing two compulsory songs and one optional song.

Each choir was judged on how best the choirmaster could interpret musical notes, taking into consideration technicalities of the scripts, artistic performance, skill exhibition and level of professionalism.

Reggie Rockstone Freed Of 'Car Theft' Charges

Hiplife Grandpapa, Reggie Rockstone had the last laugh in court on Tuesday when he was freed of car theft charges levelled against him in 2005.

The lady who took court action against Reggie, one Peggy Martey Korley continuously absented herself from court proceedings leaving the judge with no option but to throw the case out. �If I felt I didn�t have a case I wouldn�t have been going back and forth turning up in court. I kept turning up in court and she wasn�t turning up,� says Rockstone.

Reggie was alleged to have sold a Land Rover Discovery car, belonging to Peggy Martey Korley, who turns to be a family friend to Reggie and his late father, Saint Ricci Osei, a fashion designer who died in 2001.

Reggie had pleaded not guilty to the charge as far back as May 2005. However, the press in Ghana in its coverage of the case couldn�t give a monkey�s about the fact that one is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
