Strong earthquake hits Greece

Seismologists at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece say a 5.3-magnitude earthquake has struck in the northern Aegean Sea.

The earthquake, with an epicenter about 87 miles southeast of Thessaloniki, caused no casualties or damage, authorities said.

There have been several aftershocks, with the strongest measuring 4.4, the scientists said.

Greece lies in one of the most earthquake-prone regions of the planet and strong tremors are a common occurrence.
