Iraq: Shiite cleric killed in shooting ambush
Gunmen in Iraq killed a Shiite cleric and an outspoken critic of sectarian militias in an ambush on a van carrying his wife, mother and sister, police said Sunday.
The cleric, Haider al-Saymari, was killed Saturday in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. His relatives were not harmed, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.
Al-Saymari, 38, was a follower of Iraq's top Shiite leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, a moderate. Al-Saymari was known as a critic of extremists and armed groups in Basra, particularly the Mahdi Army militia of al-Sistani's rival, radical Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr.

Iran's supreme leader defends Ahmadinejad
Iran's supreme leader was quoted Sunday as praising President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for 'standing up to' the West in a dispute over the country's nuclear program, amid growing domestic criticism of the president's management.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offered unusually glowing praise of Ahmadinejad, who upon his election in 2005 sparked a confrontation with the West by resuming uranium enrichment and also prompted worldwide condemnation for denouncing Israel. The country's spiritual leader has rarely, if ever, expressed such support for any other Iranian politician.

Iran: 2nd nuclear power plant in design stage
Iran's official news agency says the country has begun designing its second light-water nuclear power plant, a 360-megawatt facility in the southwest.
Mohammad Saeedi, deputy head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, says experts have chosen the site where the light-water nuclear reactor will be built using local technology.
Iran is still finishing building its first nuclear power plant, a 1,000-megawatt reactor in the southern city of Bushehr being constructed with Russian help. It is to begin operations early next year.

Jet carrying 90 crashes in Kyrgyzstan; 25 survive
A passenger jet carrying 90 people to Iran crashed Sunday near the main airport in Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz and U.S. officials said. An emergency official in the Central Asian nation said it appeared 25 people had survived.
The Boeing 737 crashed near the Bishkek airport, Maj. Damian Pickart, public affairs officer for the Manas U.S. air base, which is at the airport, told The Associated Press.
An official at Manas International Airport said the crash occurred after the crew reported a technical problem on board about 10 minutes into the flight to Tehran and that the plane was returning to the airport. The official said three were 83 passengers and seven crew members aboard. She spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to give her name.
