Iraqi and Iranian troops on Sunday exchanged the remains of soldiers killed during an eight-year war between the two countries. It was the first such handover since the two signed an agreement in October to work together in tracing thousands still missing after the war.

The remains of 200 Iraqis and 41 Iranians were returned to their native countries during a ceremony at a border checkpoint near the southern Iraqi city of Basra. The International Committee of the Red Cross, which oversaw the handover, said only 23 of the Iraqi and 10 of the Iranian remains have been identified.

Iran's Revolutionary Court has convicted three men of involvement in a bombing inside a packed mosque that killed 14 people in April and sentenced them to be hanged publicly near the scene of the attack.

The court said Saturday it also found the three men guilty of having links to the United States with orders to destabilize Iran through a campaign of bombings and assassinations. It said they had confessed.

'The accused, who stood trial Nov. 22, were sentenced to be hanged. Given the depth of the tragedy in the terrorist operation, it is necessary to carry out the verdicts in public next to the venue of the mosque,' the court statement said, without giving the date of the ruling.

The Zanjan revolutionary court considered the case of activist of the movement for rights of South Azerbaijanis Safarali Hoeni.

As is noted, activist Safarali Hoeni is sentenced to 6 years in prison. Earlier Hoeni has been the editor-in-chief of Shahriyar newspaper at Zandjan Free University.

Hoeni was held in prison for 18 days charged with participation in the ceremonies on the Day of International Native Language. While being in prison, the activist was subjected to physical and psychological pressure.

An Iranian detained by U.S. forces at the Baghdad airport has been released, the Iraqi government said Saturday.

The U.S. military said earlier this week that it suspected the man was a senior member of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' elite Quds force, which it suspects of funneling weapons into Iraq.

But Deputy Foreign Minister Labid Abbawi said the Iranian was released Friday.

'We contacted the Americans and asked them to release him because his presence in Iraq is legitimate,' Abbawi said.

"Ali Ashtari, who spied for the Zionist regime intelligence service (Mossad) was hanged on Monday November 17," IRNA said, quoting the counter-espionage director of the intelligence ministry.

"He had spied for Mossad for three years," the unnamed official said, adding that "his espionage was so evident," that there had never been any hope of a successful appeal against the verdict.

He was arrested in February 2007 and sentenced to death by a revolutionary court this past June.

Thus, activist Zarei was arrested by Ettelaat officials on the work place.

Though the activist was arrested three days ago, information about his arrest was received only today. The Tebriz activist was holding a peaceful sociopolitical activity.

It should be noted that he has earlier been arrested. Nothing is reported about the whereabouts of the activist.

Iran's official news agency says Iranian border guards have killed several Kurdish separatists in a shootout in the western part of the country.

IRNA's Wednesday report quotes a statement by the Kermanshah Governor General Office saying the gunmen were part of the Kurdish separatist group, known as the PEJAK.

The group is the Iranian wing of Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, which is fighting for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey.

The report says all those killed were Turkish citizens. It didn't provide any further details.

An Indian naval vessel sank a suspected pirate 'mother ship' Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden and chased two attack boats into the night, officials said, yet more violence in the lawless seas where brigands are becoming bolder and more violent.

A multinational naval force has increased patrols in the region, and scored a rare success Tuesday when the Indian warship, operating off the coast of Oman, stopped a ship similar to a pirate vessel described in numerous bulletins.
