US Cmdr: Iraq attacks at lowest level since 2003

The number of attacks in Iraq has dropped to the lowest level since 2003 despite a recent spate of high-profile bombings, the No. 2 U.S. commander in Iraq said Wednesday.

Army Lt. Gen. Lloyd Austin blamed several attacks over the past few days on al-Qaida in Iraq and warned insurgents would continue to try to chip away at growing public confidence in security gains.

The commander credited part of the drop in violence to an increase in the number of Iraqi security forces on the streets as well as the arrest of a number of key al-Qaida figures in recent months.

'Chemical Ali' sentenced to death in Iraq

A special Iraqi court has sentenced Saddam Hussein's cousin 'Chemical Ali' al-Majid to death for his role in the 1991 suppression of a Shiite uprising.

Former Baath party official Abdul-Ghani Abdul-Ghafur also received a death sentence Tuesday at the end of the trial that began in August 2007. He shouted 'down with the Persian-U.S. occupation' as the sentence was read.

Four defendants received life sentences, six face 15-year sentences and three were acquitted.

Chemical Ali is already under death sentence for the crackdown on Kurds in northern Iraq in the late 1980s.

Iraqi officials say 15 people have been killed in a suicide car bombing in the northern city of Mosul.

A police officer in Mosul says the attacker apparently was targeting a joint U.S.-Iraqi patrol in a western section of the city.

The officer and an official at the morgue where the bodies were taken have given the death toll. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

The U.S. military says initial reports show two Iraqi National Police and seven civilians were killed in Monday's attack. It says one U.S. soldier and 39 Iraqi civilians were wounded.

An American journalist for National Public Radio and three Iraqi colleagues escaped injury Sunday when a bomb attached to their car exploded as it was parked along a street in west Baghdad.

Ivan Watson, a 33 year-old reporter for NPR on temporary assignment in Iraq, said he had gone to interview people in a kebab cafe a few yards from an Iraqi army checkpoint.

Watson, who is normally based in Istanbul, Turkey, was accompanied by producer and translator Ali Hamdani and two drivers who refused to be named for security reasons.
