Berlusconi immunity questioned in corruption trial
MILAN (Reuters) - Milan judges decided Saturday to seek guidance from Italy's top court over a new law that would give legal immunity to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, dealing a blow to his plans to dismiss a corruption case.
Berlusconi is charged in Milan with paying British lawyer David Mills $600,000 in 1997 from alleged "secret funds" held by Mediaset SpA, Italy's biggest private broadcaster controlled by Berlusconi's family, to withhold incriminating details of his business dealings.

Italian troops deploy in crime-ridden town
Italian troops manned checkpoints and checked vehicles as they deployed Saturday in a crime-ridden, mob-plagued southern area of the country where six Africans were gunned down last month.
The 500 soldiers deployed in and around Caserta, a small town near Naples. The Camorra organized crime syndicate is based in the area.
Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said this week that the troops would do anything 'necessary to make the voice of the state heard.' He has called the fight between the Camorra and the state a 'civil war.'

EU leaders make vows not plans in face of crisis
Europe's four major powers vowed Saturday to do all they could to prevent Wall Street's turmoil from destabilizing their banking systems _ even as a $48 billion plan to save a German lender fell apart.
But aside from vague statements of intent and calls for tighter regulation, the leaders of Germany, France, Britain and Italy shied away from the sort of massive bailout passed by the U.S. Congress on Friday.
Europe's four largest economies pledged to coordinate national responses to help banks in distress, but their failure to agree an EU-wide plan reflects divisions in Europe on how to deal with the crisis washing up on the continent's shores from the United States.
