The Butterfly Effect
It's been gaining in popularity in recent times. Climate change has, in effect, been giving credibility to the Butterfly Effect, which posits that a minor change in one part in a system can unleash major changes in another part of the system. This phenomenon is all the more apposite if one adheres to the Gaia hypothesis. This philosophy affirms that the totality of Earth's organisms and their environment act as a "single, self-regulating system". Accordingly, small changes can upset the whole planet.

Bijaye Madhou, Director of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), is a lovely man and I have a lot of time for him. How Better do Rca Schools Fare and Why?
Traditional belief has it that confessional schools generally outperform state schools. I sincerely wonder whether in matters of discipline, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment there are major differences. And yet much praise has been lavished on the two ZEP schools under BEC authority. The ZEP school in Rodrigues lost 4.2% - a credible 62.7% at CPE in 2006.

I refer to the article entitled "watch TV and think twice" published on 18 July last in l'express. Not Just a Black-White Struggle !
I am disappointed by the superficial comments made about the situation in Zimbabwe in the local press. I understand the position of Mr Lenoir who sees this as a black-white struggle, though the ambiguous positions of two diplomatic experts and the rush of the Mauritian government to hide behind the skirts of the SADC and President Mbeki of South Africa are far less comprehensible.

Mauritius: Resolving the food crisis
The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has disclosed that the number of hungry people that increased by another 50 million last year is alarming. This is mainly due to the unprecedented food crisis in the entire world. The prices of many essential commodities have risen drastically, leaving many food items out of the reach of low income earners. Both developed and developing countries like Mauritius have been affected. But developing countries have received a 'double blow' in the form of the oil crisis.

Mauritius: The Big Sham
I'm in a squeeze. Sometimes I think that this country's doing pretty good. After all, we lead our African neighbours by quite a big margin in most economic indicators. But then I take a long hard look at the list of ministers that comprise the government. Some are doing a commendable job. Others though are frankly dismal. So glaring are their shortcomings that I needn't mention any names. You know whom I'm talking about.

She could not understand how I had allowed a young girl to go the library after school hours when the college already had a well-equipped one.
