Iran - Judicial authorities urged to clarify reasons for leading blogger's detention - 31.12.2008
Reporters Without Borders calls on the judicial authorities to clarify why Hossein Derakhshan, a leading blogger with Iranian and Canadian dual nationality, has been detained since 1 November. The judiciary's spokesman yesterday reportedly said he was being held in connection with comments he posted online about key figures of the Shiite faith.

Iraq - Call for leniency for Muntadar al-Zaidi after shoe throwing protest - 16.12.2008

Syria - Appeal court quashes early release for Michel Kilo - 15.12.2008
Reporters Without Borders firmly condemns today's refusal by a plenary session of the Damascus appeal court to grant journalist and human rights activist Michel Kilo early release. The judges overturned an earlier ruling by the court in favour of Kilo's release from Adra prison, in a Damascus suburb.

Tunisia - Journalist and human rights lawyer prevented from attending Arab media forum in Beirut - 12.12.2008
Journalist Lotfi Hidouri was arrested at Tunis' Carthage airport on 10 December as he was about to take a flight with other Tunisian journalists to attend the third Independent Arab Press Forum in Beirut. Human rights lawyer Mohammed Abbou was also prevented from taking the same flight to attend the forum.

Syria - Authorities continue judicial persecution of jailed cyber-dissident - 9.12.2008
Reporters Without Borders condemns the way the authorities are conducting the trial of cyber-dissident Habib Saleh and reiterates its call for his release. The first supposedly public hearing in his trial took place before a Damascus court of assizes on 1 December but his daughter was the only member of the public allowed to attend and the hearing began without his lawyers being present.

Syria - Letter to President Assad about record number of detained journalists and cyber-dissidents - 2.12.2008
Reporters Without Borders wrote to Syrian President Bashar el-Assad today condemning his silence and inaction in the face of an increase in arrests and convictions of journalists and cyber-dissidents. A total of nine are currently held - the highest number at any one time since he became president in July 2000.
