Where is the Church Now?

The Black church isn't what it used to be. Mega-churches preach "prosperity" to their multi-thousand congregations, but often ignore the plight of the larger Black community. In the author's Washington-southern Maryland-northern Virginia region, only two small churches were willing to host rallies to coincide with massive protests in Jena, Louisiana. The social gospel that gave so much aid and succor to a previous Movement is largely depleted in the current era, as preachers harangue congregations to chase dollars rather than justice.

This is the legacy of Rev. Ike, not Martin Luther King.

Black Caucus Caves to Corporate Power

" A mere 13 out of 40 voting CBC members in the House summoned the courage to buck the tide of corporate cash" The independence of black American leadership is under assault by a tsunami of cash.

Is it time to re-evaluate the Black Caucus?

BET's Bob Johnson & the "Secret Black Summit"

This item was originally published on February 24, 2005 in Black Commentator. "Of the eight Johnson 'questions' listed, all but three implicitly urge collaboration with the GOP or a boycott of Democrats".

With great cynicism but little guile, Johnson taps into the near-universal desire among Blacks for actions that will lead to greater operational unity and effectiveness - and attempts to channel these aspirations in Republican directions. Of the eight Johnson "questions" listed below, all but three implicitly urge collaboration with the GOP or a boycott of Democrats. The remainder - on forming a Black political party, running "favorite son" candidates, and fundraising over the Internet - are window dressing to create the impression of a broader agenda.

EUR This N That | Bush Gives Obama Middle Finger On Housing
Is there any other way to explain the fiasco that is the Obama's housing situation? Did Bush not know that he was coming to Washington? The only way that Bush could cover his tracks of refusing the President-elect housing was to put someone in the "119-room" Presidential guest house after the Obama's request in December.

Rachel Maddow reported on her show Tuesday night that there were no overnight guests scheduled to be in Blair House when he initially requested his stay in December. But now, the Washington Post has found that the former prime minister of Australia will stay there starting January 12.

So Blacks Were NOT to Blame for Prop 8?

A new report was just released by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force revealing that blacks voted only 57-59% in favor of the proposition, a stark contrast from the oft-repeated 70% figure. The study further found that "party affiliation, political ideology, frequency of attending worship services, and age" were the primary determining factors, not race, in whether a voter supported or opposed the measure. What? Ya think?

A Martin Luther King - Malcolm X Community Revitalization Initiative

here needs to be a movement, so let's begin one. The first step is an analysis - followed by action - of the state of apartheid in the U.S. The catastrophe called Katrina told the story, and we must find the solution. To do so, we must dig deep into our own history of resistance to racial and economic exploitation, and summon all our strengths to go once again into battle. Dr. Daniels lays out the beginnings of a plan that tackles gentrification - the dispersal of our people - and how the racist juggernaut can be stopped. Transformation can only come from mobilization. So let's get moving.

In his classic work Dark Ghetto, noted Sociologist Dr. Kenneth B. Clark described America's urban inner-city areas, largely inhabited by African Americans, as virtual domestic colonies controlled, manipulated and exploited by external interests, to the detriment of the residents. Much has changed in the half century since Dr. Clark offered his damning indictments about the affects of institutional racism on Blacks in urban America. As a consequence of the Black Freedom Struggle, the Black middle class has expanded dramatically. Black mayors now occupy the city halls of numerous urban centers across the country and the ranks of Black elected officials have swelled to thousands, including forty-three members of the House of Representatives, a U.S. Senator and Governor of a State. An African American sits on the Supreme Court and two Blacks have been appointed to the office of Secretary of State.

High profile athletes now earn millions of dollars as a dominant force on the sports scene and Black men head four of America's most wealthy and prestigious corporations. Much has changed in the last half century.

Venezuela expels Israeli ambassador

Venezuela has expelled the Israeli ambassador to protest against the country's assault on Gaza, after the Venezuelan president described it as a "holocaust".

The move on Tuesday came hours after 40 Palestinians were killed at a UN school where civilians had taken shelter amid the offensive.

"The Holocaust, that is what is happening right now in Gaza," Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, said in televised comments.

"The president of Israel at this moment should be taken to the International Criminal Court together with the president of the United States."

Jordan and Egypt are the only two Arab states to have normalised relations with Israel. Amman also has strong ties with the US.

The boy was not resisting arrest or restraint and was shot and killed while in their custody. They claimed the boys were fighting on the train and they were holding them.

Mind-Blowing Poisoning Of US By American 'Industry' - 24 BILLION Pounds Yearly

A new report release Thursday finds that U.S. industry releases enough neurological and developmental toxins to fill railroad cars stretching from New York City to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Every year, U.S. industry releases about 24 billion pounds of toxic substances that are believed to cause developmental and neurological problems in children.

That amount could fill a string of railroad cars stretching from New York City to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and yet there are no emissions standards for these harmful chemicals.

Partners in Permanent Aggression

Israel is taking measure of the incoming Obama administration's sensibilities to the spilling of Palestinian blood in the besieged enclave of Gaza."

Just before the U.S. elections, Senator Joe Biden shot off his mouth about the certainty that Barack Obama would be "tested" early in his presidency. "Watch," said the blathering vice-presidential candidate. "We're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy." Biden didn't predict where the test would come from.

Then, a week before Christmas, a senior Bush State Department official filled in the blanks. Obama's "mettle" would be tested by the Russians, over U.S. anti-missile systems in Eastern Europe.

The truth is, nobody on the planet wants to "test" any American president. Everyone knows the Americans are crazy, always looking for a fight, the "greatest purveyors of violence in the world," as Dr. Martin Luther King said back in 1967. There is only one other nation whose appetite for violence is comparable to the United States: Israel, America's junior partner in aggression.

"If Christ were on earth today, undoubtedly he would stand with the people in opposition to bullying, ill-tempered and expansionist powers."

However, their desperate attempt to make themselves and the world believe this is true, will never work.

Barak Obama and America's Black Men

Black men petition God on this day; January 3, 2009. If Barak Obama ignores or persecutes Black men during his term, his just reward will be white betrayal. This message has spiritual implications because the plight of Black men in this country has been a sordid one and is now come upon the throne of God's judgment.

Barak Obama is in a very precarious situation because if he ignores the persecution of Black men to satisfy white demand, he risks the swift hand of God's correction; yet if he adheres to Gods request - to alleviate white fear of Black men - he risk his political base of white support. Golly gee, what will he do?

How America Creates Poverty

The argument for the strength of America's opportunistic system continually neglects to include government paternalism, which is the foremost cause of poverty in America. Whenever the government intrudes into the private lives of its citizens with no clear-cut plan to eliminate poverty, but only as a means to address a crisis, the result is usually poverty for the victim.

The government bureaucracies involved in family and individual lives are the ones that contribute to poverty in the country. Family law courts, the welfare system, the social services system, and the child support system, are all bureaucracies that take on the responsibility of regulating a household instead of the family itself having complete control.

The Break with the African Background

n studying any phase of the character and development of the social and cultural life of the Negro in the United States, one must recognize from the beginning that because of the manner in which the Negroes were captured in Africa and enslaved, they were particularly stripped of their social heritage.

Although the area in west Africa from which the majority of the slaves were drawn exhibits a high degree of cultural homogeneity, the capture of many of the slaves in intertribal wars and their selection for the slave markets tended to reduce to a minimum the possibility of the retention and the transmission of African culture.

Cyber Hate Anonymous: How the Internet Revealed the Depths of White Hatred and Racism

Why Black America believes Republicans only are the party of racial hatred is puzzling when the Internet has proven this wrong. Race hatred spreads across all political, economic, and social lines. We are not talking about white supremacists group websites or conservative talk show host and think tanks, but race hatred is most scary coming from universities, major corporations, and the prominent groups of people we once thought were intellectually above it all.

Before the super highway of information opened the roads of communication among people, the public could only glean traces of public sentiment from television news, magazines, local newspapers and radio programs, which are designed to rosy the racial atmosphere. We had an unction that racism was real but our view of it was limited to a certain group of people based on stereotypes and faces on billboards, so to speak. It was once more difficult to prove but now has become easier.

Save the Children: What About Our Children?

You have seen the commercials and infomercials about "Saving the Children" in poor countries such as some African countries, and the pictures they show of impoverished children and villages that lack food. And you have heard the sponsor's cry for 40 - 80 cents a day (the cost of a cup of coffee) to send and support these villages and children, and many people actually wonder if the money ever gets to the people in those villages, or how much can your small cents do for the people. This is the perception of a channel-clicking view. But have you ever thought deeply about this humanitarian campaign?

First, if you have ever asked the age-old profound question why does God let children suffer, the answer has been revealed with a profound answer, which is, God does not allow children to suffer, man does. The people in these villages are mainly in African countries in which Africa, being on the American hit list for modern day under-development, has suffered at the hands of Western Imperialism for centuries.

The White Media's Profound Infatuation with Blacks

A new phase of racial adoration has begun in the US toward Black Americans by the mainstream media and university scholars of the passion-starved white elite. And once again in error, reactionary Black organizations and activist are taking to the blog sphere and web-columns in a desperate attempt to save Black America from itself. One question though: Why is the study of Blacks such an embraced theme among the white media?

They have a never ending fascination with the habits and lifestyles of Blacks - especially Black males - as if they were a pride of African lions. Afterward they report to American society their findings in a very sophisticated stream of propaganda to incite the wanting minds of those awaiting the defeat of Blacks and Black males. This fascination in itself should be studied and psychoanalyzed by someone seeking to unravel the manic minds of the white media who find the existence of Blacks psychologically seductive.

Sentencing Law and Policy: Noticing different legislative reactions to meth and crack

The June 5th edition of Congressional Quarterly Weekly (which is not available on-line) includes a terrific cover story by Seth Stern entitled "Meth vs. Crack: Different Legislative Approaches." As the title suggests, the article explores the noticeable difference between the legislative reaction to the "crack epidemic" 20 years ago and the "meth epidemic" today. Here are just a few snippets of a long and very informative article

When Rep. Elijah E. Cummings visits rural communities in the Midwest that have been ravaged by methamphetamine use, he hears stories of despair and damage not unlike those he heard during the crack epidemic of the 1980s.... The similarities exist despite fundamental differences between the populations affected by the two drugs. Meth is used mostly by white people in rural areas, while the epicenters of the crack epidemic were the African-American communities of the inner cities. "If you were to close your eyes and listen to how they talk about the effect on communities, how it breaks up families and drives down property values, you would swear they were in any urban community" during crack's heyday, Cummings says.

Gay is not the New Black Part I By Irene Monroe

EnochSpeaks said in the African-American Forum:

If you are African American and gay, and fighting alongside your white brothers and sisters for queer civil rights, the notion that "Gay is the new black" is not only absurdly arrogant, it is also dangerously divisive. In a presumably "post-racial" era with the country's first African American president-elect, it's easy for some to assume that race doesn't matter. But when critiquing the dominant white gay community's ongoing efforts to gain marriage equality and its treatment of blacks as their second-class allies in the struggle a reality check happens -- both straight and queer African American communities bond together against their strategy for marriage equality. Why? Because race does matter! Case in point: Proposition 8 and blaming the black community for its win at the ballot box. The Proposition 8 debate has brought much consternation and polarization between white gay community and African Americans. And with the expectation of a dominantly white Marriage Equality movement pushing forward a single -- issue agenda, the movement arrogantly ignores vital ways for coalition -- building within black communities, and honorable ways of connecting their struggle to those of African Americans. But there's an example that defused the tension in much of the heterosexual African American community when it was publicly arguing that same-sex marriage is not a civil rights issue. In commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Loving v. Virginia in the June 12, 1967 historic Supreme Court decision that advanced racial and marriage equality in this country, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc., marked the anniversary by stating the following: "It is undeniable that the experience of African Americans differs in many important ways from that of gay men and lesbians; among other things, the legacy of slavery and segregation is profound. But differences in historical experiences should not preclude the application of constitutional provisions to gay men and lesbians who are denied the fight to marry the person of their choice." End of Part I

POV/ Yasuko Takezawa: Can Obama unite racially divided America?

This passage in particular defined his core message: "There's not a liberal America and a conservative America: There's the United States of America. There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America: There's the United States of America." Why did these words strike such a strong chord among Americans? The background behind why many Americans have developed a strong sense of crisis about the country's deep racial divisions is not well-known, unlike that behind America's political split. The United States has long held to the "one-drop rule"--people with any trace of African ancestry (one drop of black blood) are basically considered black. Thus, no African-Americans, not even the best and brightest like Obama, can escape racial discrimination.

Liberal Whites' Ignorance and lack of Action Against White Racist the Real Problem to Race Relations

One of the main problems with race relations is not racist whites but 'liberal' whites that are ignorant of and underestimate how ingrained racism is among their people. The presidential race and victory of President Elect Barack Obama has brought the sickness of white supremacy to the forefront. From conservative white radio host to white elected officials to their own FAUX News network; the hatred, fear and ignorance of white America is once again rearing it's ugly head. Question is, do whites have the desire to face their demons and the fortitude to destroy them or, in this age of economic hard-times, give into their demons...

Facing an influx of refugees, the residents of Algiers Point could have pulled together food, water and medical supplies for the flood victims. Instead, a group of white residents, convinced that crime would arrive with the human exodus, sought to seal off the area, blocking the roads in and out of the neighborhood by dragging lumber and downed trees into the streets. The newly formed militia, a loose band of about fifteen to thirty residents, most of them men, all of them white, was looking for thieves, outlaws or, as one member put it, anyone who simply "didn't belong."
