Methodist advocates evolution
United Methodist Church joins the 21st century by adopted, as church policy, three resolutions on Evolution.
1. "We find that science's descriptions of cosmological, geological and biological evolution are not in conflict with theology."
2. Endorsed 'The Clergy Letter Project' and encourages Methodist pastors to sign the open letter on evolution that affirms that "the timeless truths of the Bible and the discoveries of modern science may comfortably coexist" and supports the teaching of evolution alone in schools instead of as "one theory among others."
The third puts the church on record as opposing the teaching of "faith-based theories such as Creationism and Intelligent Design" in public-school science classes.

Guest Columnist - Optimism in Evolution - Op-Ed
When the dog days of summer come to an end, one thing we can be sure of is that the school year that follows will see more fights over the teaching of evolution and whether intelligent design, or even Biblical accounts of creation, have a place in America's science classrooms.
In these arguments, evolution is treated as an abstract subject that deals with the age of the earth or how fish first flopped onto land. It's discussed as though it were an optional, quaint and largely irrelevant part of biology. And a common consequence of the arguments is that evolution gets dropped from the curriculum entirely.
This is a travesty.

Are we science-savvy enough to make informed decisions?

Pharyngula vs the DI: Round 2^64
Christopher Hitchens was impressed by the existence of blind cave organisms, and wrote that they argue against a linear progression in evolution. He's quite right; creationism doesn't explain why their god tossed in to salamanders and fish a collection of complex developmental mechanisms that the animals simply throw away and do not use. Evolution does - descent from a sighted ancestor explains how blind cave animals can still possess the machinery for a lost organ.
Do you think the Discovery Institute would let this challenge pass by? Of course not. They put their top man on the job, so Casey Luskin wrote a rebuttal.
